The Emotionally Healthy Leader
by Peter Scazerro | Book Summary
Author: Peter Scazerro |
The reader is taken on a journey into a more contemplative approach to face the personal issues every leader engages. Examining concepts like sabbath, solitude, and exploring one's 'shadow,' the road to emotionally healthy leadership is shown with clarity and depth. The book centers on two areas: the inner life and the outer life. The inner life's focus is on the deepening of the inner, spiritual life of the leader. The outer life demonstrates how to plan, build teams, set boundaries, and begin afresh. This is no ordinary how-to book; it is a resource to build the person more into the image of Christ with the result being more effective leadership. |
Peter Scazerro founded and then led New Life Fellowship Church, a multiethnic church in Queens, New York, for 26 years. The rapid growth of a young church in a working class community led to both success in reaching people and challenges throughout the years of growth. In fact, pastor Peter's wife Geri quit the church for a season as things became so turbulent.
It was out of this season of a 'dark night of the soul' that the church came to realize that emotional health and spiritual vitality are inseparable. They embarked on a journey that shifted from focusing on gifts to character, and from growth outwardly to deeper, inward health and growth. After a four-month monastic sabbath, Peter and Geri discovered the riches of solitude and silence and began teaching the contemplative ways to the church.
Scazerro co-founded Emotionally Healthy Discipleship, a ministry aimed at helping churches move forward by slowing down so they can develop deeply changed leaders who lead with care and wisdom.

Overview:
The role of leading — especially in a church setting — can be both demanding and depleting. Rather than offering a quick fix, The Emotionally Healthy Leader takes a deep dive into the inner life of the leader to reveal resources for dealing with the stresses of leadership, issues of leadership like team-building and culture, and the personal growth of the leader.
