Book Summary of Union With Christ by Rankin Wilbourne

"The challenges facing today's church often seem insuperable." (p. vii) Church attendance has dwindled. Christian values have largely been abandoned. Even more disturbing is the fact that "many forms of paganism are now on the rise" (p. vii).

As Christians in the West wrestle with these developments, they must remember two truths:

  1. The world at the time of Jesus and the apostles was thoroughly pagan.
  2. The apostles proclaimed good news about Jesus, believing that Jesus was sovereign over "all the powers of the pagan world" (p. vii).

"The present book is written to draw attention to the ways in which various forms of paganism have once against become prominent in our world." (p. viii) Additionally, the aim of this book is to suggest that the "living God has been equipping the church in a variety of ways" (p. viii). The gospel will not succumb to pagan forces.

As a starting point, we must recognize that when neo-pagan people insist that they are spiritual but not religious, they are in fact both spiritual and religious. This religion may not be practiced in a church building, but neo-pagans actively worship gods like Mammon, Aphrodite, and Mars.
