Book Summary of Union With Christ by Rankin Wilbourne

It is no secret that children growing up today under the growing influence of social media are increasingly struggling with anxiety, depression, and general discouragement. While this growing trend and the pressures it brings is primarily felt by children, its impact is also inevitably felt by parents who desperately desire to rescue their own children and help instill in them the confidence necessary for a flourishing life.

The desired goal of developing confidence sounds simple enough. Yet how can parents ensure that we are helping develop the right kind of confidence? Even more importantly, how can we ensure that the confidence we are helping to develop will last beyond childhood and outside of our home?

The secret to solving this problem is, indeed, the development of confidence. That confidence, however, cannot be rooted in a boastful dependence on self. Instead, "the secret to helping our children develop a humble, compassionate confidence is by encouraging them to embrace God-confidence instead of self-confidence" (p. 18). It is only when children learn to embrace who God created them to be that they can move beyond the online world of discouragement and into the path that God has laid out before them.
