Book Summary of If There's a God Why Are There Atheists by R.C. Sproul

The debate between atheists and theists spans centuries. If There's a God Why Are There Atheists? seeks to explain the motivation atheists have for rejecting God by dealing with major arguments from prominent atheists to help Christians defend the Christian faith as they seek to give an answer for the hope that lies within them (1 Pe. 3:15).

The book is divided into two major sections. Part 1 deals with the battle between atheists and theists. In the last 300 years or so atheism has gained traction. "Atheism, as an intellectual option, received a great boost from the so-called Enlightenment of eighteenth-century Europe." (p. 22)

Part 2 explains motivations for atheism over theism. The fundamental reason for atheism is sin. No one is an atheist simply because he or she is just not really sure if God exists. Deep down everyone knows that God exists.

Because of His holiness, the God of the Bible is not a natural option for invention by man. Rather, the Bible ultimately reveals that there are for more instinctive reasons for man to invent atheism so as to try to avoid God.
