Book Summary of Union With Christ by Rankin Wilbourne

Social media acts as a foil that highlights the incredible polarization that has happened in Western culture in recent years. Those who participate in various online communities often find themselves faced with the choice between segregating themselves with like-minded people for the sake of self-preservation or entering into the fray of constant arguing, trolling, and malicious behavior coming from those who think differently about key issues. However, there is another way: the way of the peacemaker.

"Peacemakers position their communication on the firm foundation of the transformative gospel of Jesus Christ. They advocate for social media communication that takes seriously the biblical mandate to participate in the ministry of reconciliation… Whether dealing with mundane daily conflicts or confronting the profound impacts of a pandemic, peacemakers relentlessly contend for Christ-centered reconciliation." (p. 6)

Followers of Jesus live in the light of the reality that they have been reconciled to God through His Son. As such, Christ-followers must display their identity as those who have been given the ministry of reconciliation (2 Co. 5:18), even in their online interactions. This reconciling behavior leads followers of Jesus to post peace online, when culture expects the exact opposite.
