The Attributes of God
by Arthur W. Pink | Book Summary
Author: Arthur W. Pink |
One work that has lasted over several generations is The Attributes of God by Arthur W. Pink. Pink gives a thorough look at different aspects of God's character packaged in a way that is readable for scholars of God's Word and any follower of Christ alike. Addressed are attributes of God like sovereignty, love, and grace, and the emphasis is on how our knowledge of God should direct true believers to live for His glory alone. "A spiritual and saving knowledge of God is the greatest need of every human nature." (p. 7) The foundation of wisdom for mankind is the knowledge of who God is. It is a knowledge that should lead to obedience. "God is only truly known in the soul as we yield ourselves to Him, and submit to His authority." (p. 7) All of God's attributes work together perfectly to bring the will of Him who desires the very best for His creation. God's knowledge is unending, His holiness drives both his love and wrath, and the Lord's sovereignty rules over all. |
Arthur W. Pink was an English Bible teacher who was relatively unknown during his lifetime. He was born in Nottingham, England in 1886 to a Protestant family. He began being a part of the Theosophical Society, before renouncing that for evangelical Christianity in his early 1920's.
He did not receive much in the way of theological education, though he did attend Moody Bible Institute in Chicago for less than one year in 1910.
Pink spent the majority of his middle age years serving all over the world in the role of pastor. He began serving in Silverton, Colorado, and also served in South Carolina among other places in pastoral ministry. He also served overseas in Australia and finally returned to England to serve in ministry. He spent the final 15 years of his life devoted to studying God's Word and writing books and commentaries.
Some of Pink's other known works include his extensive work on The Sovereignty of God and several works he called Gleanings. He became much more well-known after his death in 1952.
Arthur Pink's theology and writings were staunchly Reformed and dispensational in nature, and he was heavily influenced from an early age by the works of H.A. Ironside.
