The Mystery of Providence
by John Flavel | Book Summary
Author: John Flavel |
God's providence is for our good and comfort. His providence is for our benefit and is a gift for us to use when we are in troubled times. For Christians who keep a record of what God has done for them, they will be able to remember what God has brought them through and how He brought them through it. Meditating on the truth of God's providence and the benefits we have received from Him will build our trust in God and His future dealings with us. We may not always understand the why of what we are facing, but we can trust who brought the circumstances to us and how they will work out. |
John Flavel was a pastor and theologian from the line of the Puritans. He was educated at Oxford and was a pastor in Dartmouth before being forced out by the Act of Uniformity in 1662.
His writings are vast and include sermons, spiritual guidance, and a commentary on the work of the Westminster Assembly which produced the Westminster Confession of Faith.

Overview:
God performs all things on behalf of His people (Ps. 57:2). The saints take great comfort in the reality that God is working out everything in the world for His glory. We are not the victims of fate or some impersonal force. God Himself has a wise, providential plan for this world, and He is going to bring it to completion.
God's providence is for our good and comfort. His providence is for our benefit and is a gift for us to use when we are in troubled times. For Christians who keep a record of what God has done for them, they will be able to remember what God has brought them through and how He brought them through it.
