The Triune God
by Fred Sanders | Book Summary
Author: Fred Sanders |
Since the center of the doctrine of the Trinity is God's self-revelation as triune, the Trinity is a revealed truth rather than an invention of the church. This gift of revelation, attested to by biblical witness, nonetheless requires deep reflection. This in turn prompts praise fuelled by the incredible privilege of knowing God as He is in Himself. While many Trinity studies work sequentially through the biblical data before moving to church fathers and other theologians, this book sticks to theological reflection on Scripture in order to retrieve patristic insights. After all, "the most patristic way to proceed toward a well-ordered doctrine of the Trinity is…to study Scripture" (p. 24). |
Fred Sanders is professor of theology in the Torrey Honors Institute at Biola University in La Mirada, California. He gained his PhD through Graduate Theological Union, his dissertation was entitled The Image of the Immanent Trinity: Implications of Rahner's Rule for a Theological Interpretation of Scripture and was published in 2004 in the Lang series in systematic theology.
He has written a number of books, including The Deep Things of God: How the Trinity Changes Everything, and Wesley on the Christian Life. He has also edited and contributed to volumes such as The Voice of God in the Text of Scripture and Jesus in Trinitarian Perspective: An Intermediate Christology.
