Why Does God Care Who I Sleep With
by Sam Allberry | Book Summary
Author: Sam Allberry |
Against this backdrop, Christianity's view of sex and sexuality can seem prudish and very limiting. Why does God care who people sleep with? With all the issues in the world that Christians could focus on, why does so much emphasis fall on sex? Everyone instinctively understands the importance of sex. Sleeping with someone involves so much more than a physical act. It is, when understood biblically, a complete union of two people: physically, emotionally, and psychologically. So, ultimately, "God cares who we sleep with because he cares deeply about the people doing the sleeping" (p. 10). God presents His relationship with His people through the metaphor of marriage. Jesus, the great bridegroom, will come to collect His bride, the church. The sexual union of two people should express this whole-life devotion and union with the other person. God cares who we sleep with because He deeply cares about us. |
Sam Allberry is a pastor, apologist, author, and speaker who is best known for his work on sex and sexuality. His other works include: Is God Anti-Gay, What God Has to Say About Our Bodies, and 7 Myths about Singleness. He is ordained in the Church of England and studied theology at Wycliffe Hall, Oxford University
Allberry's perspective is unique in that he is a believer living a sexually abstinent lifestyle because he is and always has been only attracted to other men. His work on this topic, therefore, comes from biblical persuasion and personal experience. As he says, "Many would assume that the Christian sexual ethic couldn't possibly work for someone in my situation… And yet so many of us, like and unlike me, have found the teaching of Jesus to be a better story to live by" (p. 137).
